THE LADY IN GREY:
is a recurring motif in the riddles; and in the narrative, Lucy is often described wearing silvery grey or oyster. The Lady in Grey is a familiar figure in many accounts of ghostly apparitions; but she can also be said to be neither black nor white - neither fitting staunchly in one camp or another. Many fashion designers regard it as the most "perfect neutral", a colour of elegance and sophistication; and it is associated with both wisdom and compromise. It is connected with Lent in Christianity; and also with mourning and sadness. Though sometimes pessimistic, it is also an indicator of intellect: using our brains is described as engaging the "grey matter". The many ladies in grey who have a ghostly connection, of course, may wander through time and space without hindrance or borders. The human eye can identify more than three
hundred different shades of grey.
