In tarot spiritualism, the opening up of a mystery, and a clue handed to the recipient; the co-operation between the intellect (at the head of the key) and the control of physical action (at the lock end). This is also connected with the Key of Solomon, the key to the Temple, and the key in Masonic ritual. Through Christ's passing of the keys of heaven to Peter, it has come to mean the authority of the church.

In art, it is the symbol of St Peter, and Cybele, the Phrygian earth goddess; also Martha, sister of Mary Magdalene who is the patron saint of all good housekeepers; and the Apocalypse - a dragon may disappear into a pit toward hell while an angel holds aloft...
